Andrzej Zarycki & Sławomir Zubrzycki
The Cracovian Suite

The Cracovian Suite by Andrzej Zarycki and Sławomir Zubrzycki, composed in 2003, is a programme composition referring to the Romantic tradition of the suite. It combines music originating from various sources. The final version was edited and instrumented by Sławomir Zubrzycki in 2006.

The Suite is a fantasia on Cracovian themes, it refers to characteristic sound of music known from theatres of Cracow, in particular to so called artistic song, associated with Piwnica pod Baranami1) in Cracow. The Suite makes a peculiar artistic study on various artists' compositions. The particular parts are entitled with original titles of the pieces studied. The most popular and recognizable: Ta nasza młodość, Chwalmy Pana, Skrzypek Hercowicz, Sur le pont d'Avignon and Cichosza have become the icons of the unique Cracovian style. The others, less known, reflect the climate of Cracow music bohemia.

The authors have applied a wide range of classical means of expression, facture treatment, composing techniques from previous epochs, musical rhetoric and comparison of music threads. Thus, creating their own vision of musical archetypes they convey the meaning of a song without words. It was the authors' conscious decision to refrain from contemporary musical language. It was the choice of songs itself that excluded any other language but the one representing the classical dur-mol system.

The Cracovian Suite is a pastiche of chamber music. Classical motifs and themes from well-known compositions of Zygmunt Konieczny, Grzegorz Turnau, Andrzej Zarycki and other Cracovian artists imperceptibly merge in imitations and counterpoints. Certain motifs from Schubert and Beethoven become specific rhetoric figures. The hidden musical figures and motifs are not only a commentary for programme contents but also a play with the audience.

The Suite is composed for a quartet of instruments (a piano, a violin, a cello and a clarinet) with an optional role of a double bass. The leading role falls to the piano- it enriches the whole with numerous virtuoso cadenzas. A small Irish side-drum (an additional role for the pianist) and, optionally, a gran cassa ensure some extra colouring.

The Suite makes two different worlds meet- the classical, as far as the form, instrumental facture and instrumentation are concerned, and the world of contemporary songs. Similarly, the authors of the Suite represent two different worlds of music. Andrzej Zarycki is one of the creators and the composer of artistic song, the author of many Ewa Demarczyk's2) hits, and the composer of theatrical music. Sławomir Zubrzycki, on the other hand, is a pianist and a composer specializing in Avant-garde music of the XX and XXI centuries.
